About Our Program

Our Purpose and Philosophy

The purpose of Rainbow Riders Childcare Center is to provide a healthy, secure, nurturing and creative environment for children ages six weeks through twelve years.  We believe that children learn best through playful learning experiences.  Our philosophy of considering and meeting the needs of each child as an individual is accomplished through professional teaching strategies, creative curriculum planning, careful documentation and the utilization of various community resources.

Rainbow Riders philosophy reflects our images and beliefs about children, families, and teachers. Teachers make learning visible through our environment, curriculum and documentation.

Influence to Our Curriculum: The Schools of Reggio Emilia

Recognized for their exemplary infant-toddler and preschool centers (Newsweek, 1991), the early childhood programs in Reggio Emilia, Italy have inspired our Program at Rainbow Riders. Delegates from around the world including several people from RR have visited Reggio to better understand the approach and to find ways to adapt and to reinvent their school’s philosophy. We value the underlying principles of this approach where children, families and teachers collaborate, discover many “languages” of expression and co-construct knowledge together in a beautiful, aesthetic environment.

Both schools are currently engaged in a quality improvement process.  Similar to the emergent curriculum that we plan for your children, our professional development for teachers has become a plan that is developed with insights, observations, and by listening to what’s going on in the classrooms.

Embracing Quality Childcare:  Virginia Star Quality Rating System (VSQI)

The VSQI was created to help parents and caregivers find high quality child care programs. Just like restaurants or hotels, each preschool or child care program is given a star rating, from one to five stars. In July 2015, our Knollwood site achieved a 3-Star rating through this, state-wide process and our CRC site achieved a 4-Star rating. We are continually on a journey for self-improvement at Rainbow Riders.  We know that quality is like a moving target and as soon as we reach our goals, we get busy setting new ones.  This process keeps us challenged, striving to be the best we can be, and ever-committed to serve our families and the community well.

National Association for The Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

Families rely on NAEYC Accreditation to ensure the quality of education and care provided in programs for young children.  NAEYC Accreditation is the mark of quality, helping parents find the best possible early childhood experience. Evidence of our commitment to high standards of quality in childcare is our national accreditation of the Knollwood site, by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), achieved by only 7 percent of early childhood programs nationwide. This achievement indicates that we have been recognized as a quality early childhood program promoting the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of young children. Some of the criteria for accreditation that you will notice at Rainbow Riders include: low staff-to-child ratios, individualistic care, regular family communication and involvement, planned learning activities, plenty of materials and supplies, warm adult-to-child interactions and nutritious snacks and lunches. These quality standards are followed as universal criteria at both sites.

We are confident that even with the expansion in 2009, our Program maintains the high quality standards expected by NAEYC Accreditation, the nationwide “gold standard” for early childhood programs.
