One of the many things you’ll find unique about Rainbow Riders is the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), one of the only PTAs associated with a child care center in Virginia. Below, you’ll find some information on the PTA.  We hope that every teacher and family will join our PTA and/or volunteer in the center for 2-3 hours each year.  When families get involved in the Program, everyone benefits - especially our children.

PTA Mission and Roles

The Mission of Rainbow Riders PTAs is to partner with families and community to enhance our children’s school experience at Rainbow Riders.

The Rainbow Riders PTA supports parents and staff in four key ways:

  • Community Building: Daily pick-up and drop-off times provide little opportunity for social interaction, so the Rainbow Riders PTA organizes events and activities to help parents, teachers, and administrators get to know each other and provide an opportunity for parents to mingle with parents of other children at the center. The Gala and Auction held each spring, the largest PTA event, brings together hundreds of parents, teachers, and members of the larger New River Valley community. The PTA also organizes an annual Provider Recognition Day to thank teachers and administrators for the superior care they provide to our children. These events help build Rainbow Riders from a collection of individuals into a community of interconnected people and families.

  • Parent/Teacher Liaison: The PTA serves as a facilitator of communications between Rainbow Riders staff and parents. We maintain email lists to ensure timely communication of emergency or weather notices, as well as news and information on room or site activities. The PTA also provides a body through which parents can ensure that parental priorities and goals are represented.

  • Investments: PTA organizes several fundraisers that allow the PTA to make investments in the center making it a better place for both parents and children. In the past, the PTA has made investments in supplies, playground equipment, and the Tuition Supplement Program (our scholarship) to ensure that every family has access to our programs.

  • Service: Lastly, many PTA activities involve outreach into and service targeted at the wider New River Valley community. These have included food drives and gift purchases around the winter holidays.

Rainbow Riders PTA dues support the Virginia PTA, whose mission is to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies; assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; and encourage parent and public involvement in the health, education and welfare of children and youth.

Recap From Last Year

Rainbow Riders PTA accomplished a great deal during the 2013 – 2014 school year. Events and activities included a Family Social with the band PanJammers, Week of the Young Child activities, Provider Recognition Day (teacher appreciation), supporting the teachers to attend the state early childhood conference: VAECE and playground improvements. The PTA also helped organize a food drive and hosted a Parent Lecture Series.  Some of these sessions included "Picky Eaters" and "Kindergarten Readiness" with a panel of Kindergarten teachers.

PTA Meeting Schedule

PTA meetings are on the 1st Tuesday of each month (September thru May) at 5:45 PM. Childcare for the meetings is free and pizza for children is provided at a cost of $3.00/child.
